Last December I was enjoying some time off, surfing the Web, when I came upon this site for the first time. Like a foggy Rat Beach flashback I was teleported back in time to when I was a hungry young lead player trying to do something borrowed and bluesy with Clark and Rick. My first impression of the 86-90 videos was that though these songs all seemed like rough diamonds (and somewhat incomplete as ideas), they had the live tone of the bands we were trying to emulate (I mean steal from), and perhaps more importantly the energy needed to convince folks there was something going on here despite ourselves and our bravado. It’s been a real trip reviewing this material after 15 years or so.
When we formed this group, our intention was to take the bands we were heavily into at the time (Zeppelin, Purple, The Who, Ziggy era Bowie etc.) and forward that progressive landscape into the 80s (gag), within a formula of 3-5 minute originals. What I didn't know then (that I know now), is that you cannot completely develop that spirit in a rock radio formula. Shark was right in thinking that "radio friendly" hooks provided us with the greatest chance of landing a recording contract. However, It would not have provided me with an opportunity to enjoy playing the guitar for a living.
I have should have known by 1990 that bands were no longer signed based on the strength of live performance. It was the era of cute boys and girls giggling their assets to tunes written by ghost writers for the major lbels. Prog rock was dead, my idols in rehab. Clark and I had allot of conflict on this point (especially in 1989 and 1990) with Rick often having to cide in 2-1 majorities that weren't really fair to anyone. Clark and I
were often polarized in the direction for the band. With a good manager, this could have been all avoided.
In the spirit on preserving future (positive) dialogue with the Clark and Rick, I will not go into the specifics of why this band originally disbanded (in 1990) only to reform (using the GE name) and sling a completely different form of music and vibe. I am completely alien to the stuff that does not involve me in GE. It’s not even close to the kind of material I would have contributed. GE, in my mind, GE was never engineered to play punk music. However, here in 2008 I do not blame Shark for his passion to get the band signed and continue a completely different direction. I was never as hungry as he was, knowing a somewhat lucrative career path was already in the wings if I didn't piss it away. At any rate, the music promoters and management types I still encounter today just validate to me that, as a business, the music industry is still full of wankers.
In retrospect, my favorite thing about GE was the camaraderie shared by the three of us as we went about our "us versus the world" way of developing the songs. I had allot of fun hanging out in Rick's room gleaning ideas from our favorite bands, and maybe just maybe having one or two beers. Too bad band politics and the bullshit that goes with it compromised friendships at times. Perhaps if we weren't so business like about things we could have operated with a bit more patience and carried on for another year or two. No matter, by 1992 I moved out of LA for good any hadn't really put that much stock into this band's accomplishments until recently.
Songs like "Magic Man" and "Number One" still sound good today. The Music Machine footage on the Web is not bad. In reviewing that footage, It seems like I played a lot of leads to fill up space. No way you get away with that today, but remember in the late 80's "shredding" was in vogue, and being a poor man's Joe Satriani was no real sin. You decide if we suffered from not having a bonefide frontman on vocals.
GE had to work much harder at getting gigs than the pansy ass dance bands of the day that strived for nothing more than pouring enough booze down their lady friends to get em into the back of their car before the Redondo PD broke up the party at 10:15. To me however, this band originally had a more noble agenda. The three formal demos we made between 86 and 90 were rushed for sure, but the ideas aren't bad. To bad, there is no real way to restore some of those original recordings, but no one uses that kind of mastering tape anymore.
I often wonder why if Clark is still so enamored with GE he uses this site as a forum for advancing his political agenda. It diminishes the emphasis on GE's music. Why would you want to know my views on the impending election? I am a guitar player, not Rev Al Sharpton!

Like I've tried to articulate on this ol' website many times, ...it's a weird tough walk me bein' the Sharkman. I know that virtually everywhere I go ...and I have ever been and I will ever go in the future too on this journey called Sharklife,..well I know that most people ain't gonna like the Shark...and not only that,..they ain't gonna respect me either and further more..they're also gonna 'try' to get the best of a Shark if they can and not only that...'groups' will collude and conspire to 'talk shit' about a Shark - 'all the time' behind my back,..but once in a while to my face in one of those 'lets all gang up on the bad Shark' "confrontations" for all to see and behold and ofcourse in that now famous known by all thee other bees 'way' to 'embarrass' and 'humiliate' a Shark....SO THIS HERE WEBSITE exists as a sort of nuclear deterrant that serves to 'humiliate' and EMBARRASS 'ALL OF YOU' ...AS IT 'exists as your WORST NIGHTMARE HERE IN GOOD OL' CYBERSPACE' as you pray the roving eyes and lazer beaming Shark razor stare of electronic hell never FOCUSES UPON YOU ! ...But beware...the angry vengeful Shark is 'never out of ideas' and I have been deeply hurt by a lot of people....and you ALL know who you are,...PRAY AND ANGRY Shark doesn't get into too FOUL A MOOD somenight on the net -for I may drag you by name through the Sharky realm of torture internet style !,...me being a 44 year old man now,..I don't give a shit if you wanna get in my face and tell me stuff like 'yer gonna kick my ass up around my ears' n all that anymore....GO RIGHT AHEAD and beat up and or threaten an' old man,..see who gives a shit else anymore anyway ! There once was this carpet guy who came to a Shark's house and him and me had previously 'agreed' on a price to have my carpet cleaned as I was desperate to sell my house which was slipping away from me from potential 'short sale' into foreclosure,...now, seeing the desperate straights that a Shark was in, this carpet guy...realising in conversations with a Sharky that i was a nice noble chap....he decided to bill my good ol' credit card 800 dollars instead of the agreed 250 or whuddever it was...he did this in a very clever way too - in that i didn't discover it until like A MONTH LATER - WHEN MY CREDIT CARD CALLED ME TO INFORM ME THAT THEY WERE SHUTTING OFF MY CARD BECAUSE IT WAS OVER THE LIMIT !!....NOW, it hit me right between the eyes that this would probobly not happen to my brothers Doug or Jeff or some drug dealer lookin' dude with tattoos and eyebrow piercings and cigarette breath.
Yeahs, this type of shit 'will' however happen to a Sharky 'all the time' and kind gentle blokes 'like a Sharky' out there routinely....I guesss that's just the lay of the land...

Let me give you a grande introduction to the Flipmeister....not that you all need one as he is well documented here at my page as well as he is seen thousands of times a day performing on his red Les Paul or Stratocaster on the illustrious electronic pages of Google video ...and yes, lately ..even G.e's little pink Youtube page is finally starting to get some good traffic to it !!
Now Flipper , at 43 years young - much like me, is a thing of wonder....Long long ago, I made the horrible mistake error of leaving one of rock's greatest innovative instrumentalists and songwritors. I just found out today (tonight - its 4;00 am-ish),..while surfing the net ...and checking out 'Media Kitchen" studio up there in Torrance and the South Bay...and stumble-ing upon this band called 'Ninth Circle' ...I just discovered today and found out the very sad news that Bill Krodel - My studio engineer...has died...
Apparently, he left us back on September 19th...
And for some reason earlier tonight, I had this mysterious inspiration to go on the net and write a buncha great things about him...
I began to think about Billy,..and I didn't know why..
..Now I know why...
..it was a little bit like the night I heard Tom Shannon had died...
it was like voices were whispering into my left ear...

down here in San Diego...

The genius of this MAN named Bill Krodel...a patient studio guy,..who let you slide, who was always so nice..always full of jokes, humorous I know right to the end,..and I have seen Billy damn near die at a hospital up there in Torrance long ago from a time when he drank way too much...the hospital where i was born,..Harbor General (Now known as county UCLA),....WILD BILLY KRODEL was a genius who got great studio sounds...he worked with so many bands...Everybody loved this guy...I wish I could have been loved like that..or maybe I don't ! BILLY WAS 'MEANT' TO BE LOVED LIKE THAT !! ...perhaps i simply just wasn't !
What Billy Krodel meant to me and my band cannot be measured...you name the song be-it White Black Thang or the keyboards on Misogynistia or Gurdle (Katie's song).....Billy "made" all my songs - HE MADE ME !!
After I walked away from the business back in 92', I could never really bring myself to record again,...because really i knew that "i needed" to record with Billy,..and his keyboards and ability to twiddle the knobs....

Jeff Ohara ; 1983 South High School - Thanks Jeff !! For listening and supporting the 'early" incarnations of G.e. !!
Way way back in 1982/1983, When Clark the Shark was 17 going on 18-ish at the dreaded South High School in Torrance - a place Shark hated to go to,...Clark the Shark met this short little asian dude named Jeff Ohara, a guy that would become a rare acquaintance of the Shark (Shark was like this extremely unpopular guy even though I had long blond locks and you would think that the chicks would just be all just out to rape me....but like I have previous thought (recently mainly in my figurings) and written on here - 251 is the 'root' of this with Doug going around town and assuring everyone around the South Bay of whatta' little putz that the Shark is..)....Anyway, Jeff Ohara was this kid sorta like a Shark,..but I would honestly say that unlike the Shark who had a ton of potential to be a cool cat that all the hip South Bay key influencial surfers could grow to love,..I would say that Jeff Ohara was a true nerd far FAR beyond the scope attainable by a Sharkie....which made him 'bait' for the Sharkie music authority as Shark seemed like a hip kid probobly to him ( I hung out with Jeff quite a bit and we went to a few L.A. Kings Hockey games in the early 1980's - ...after South High School in Torrance, we went our separate ways....I think I saw Jeff maybe one time in 1987 over near Bel Air where I worked and apparently I got word that Jeff was working at a theatre on Wilshire Blvd....Jeff seemed hard at work and he didn't have alot of time that night to talk to me which I remember I found odd ,..and I was disappointed.....I've never seen Jeff since). Anyway, Jeff was an honest kid ...that you might find straight out of a Ferris Buhler movie in the 1980's - he was sorta like the 'Cameron" character..he had a sad rejected attitude - atleast thats how i took it... Jeff was not a kid that would stab you in the back,..he wasn't a part of that South Bay Torrance kinda crap where people gang up on you and form cliques or alliances or any of that kinda stupid society shit.....Jeff was pretty much a straight shooter who told it like it is and who had nothing to gain or lose.....and when Jeff Ohara heard the earliest of Clark Hagins 'Greenhouse Effect type' demo tape 'home recordings cassettes,....he was blown away by them and mezmorized...and he quipped; "THERES NO WAY YOU RECORDED ALL THAT STUFF IN YOUR HOME BEDROOM STUDIO CLARK!"
Jeff was one of the first and earliest 'ardent supporters' of Clark the Shark's music and I remember that he liked the tapes so much that he wanted to 'borrow them' to play for people, his parents, his neighbors, or who-ever....and he insisted that I make him "copies" !!
I believe now that I did....
And I hope out there where ever you are Jeff..that you still have them !!
I remember that I told Jeff way back in 1982 or 83, that I had played my music to many people and that no one seemed all that impressed or thought that they were a big deal and i remember Jeff just gave me sorta a shocked stunned look,...and then it sorta turned to anger and he just looked away....and I remember I just said to him; "Dude,..whats the big deal..." - ya know that shit how alotta people 'may not understand' or 'people are into all kindsa shit and maybe they just don't get mine yet?" ..sorta thing.. ..the thinking of the young Shark i guess (or maybe inside i knew EXACTLY what Jeff meant and i was pissed too) ....
I remember again Jeff looked at me with a look as if to say ; "You idiot,...yer one' a those genius people with a vision,..but yer stupid family purposely doesn't 'get you' or support you"...then he just sighed and he was like "Clark, you better find a way to get your music to the right people"

I remember that I came back and saw Jeff one day at his house in like the summer of 1983 and I gave him some new shit that I had just recorded...and I said; "Jeff, get back to me...I value your opinion !!"...I remember I saw Jeff a little later and he was like; "Yeah,..its good just like all yer other shit but big deal.." I remember I was like,...'hmm maybe he doesn't really like it - though i'm sure its good anyway"
What I have figured out here in 2006,7, and 8 finally is that Jeff Ohara was a pretty smart cookie way back then and he already had it figured out that Clark the Shark was really good and talented,..but what Jeff Ohara also 'knew' were some key things about the South Bay in that; "Shark's immediate surrounders do not support him and they never will and furthermore; if ya ain't one of the 'in" schmucks in the south bay,..well then yer just doomed to being just another nowhere putz..."
And that is what Shark has been ,...until recently where finally much of the world can view alot of Greenhouse Effect and Shark and no ,...without the filters of Bam Magazine, Doug and Jeff Hagins, the Creep in the blue Vw Bus,...and many other fuckers too who hate a Shark's fucking guts!!
To Jeff Ohara, Dude where ever you are,...I thank you for your support of my music,...You are like the earliest version of Jeff Snow or Steve Hovernton or Scotty Combs, or Michelle - Dave's chick,....Dude, You supported a young Shark and his dreams and not only did you not laugh at me,...you gave my music the natural response it trully really deserved way back then....

Notes; Jeff would give me a ride to SCROC in Torrance where I had Don Wilson's Graphic Arts class and i met these chicks who knew my dad up at PV High...it was some of the closest things to 'fun times' a Shark has ever had... ..I hung out with Skull (Karl Urhausen - a genius artist...this is a guy with abilities that a Shark could never touch...He could paint pictures as well as carve sculpters,..he had super 'real abilities' - not at all a hack like Shark who never bothered to really take musical lessons)..
Me and Jeff Ohara would listen to Rush, the Who, Triumph, and all kindsa great music in the SCROC parking lot ..( I guess maybe Dave Grohl would be proud of Shark now learning this,..and maybe I'm 'in-the know-metal-hip like him,..enough for him now - who knows !!!)

Final Note; Apparently, these were the 1982/ 83' cassette tapes where i achieved maybe rock's earliest muddy distorted 'grunge' sound by 'intentionally' poking punching holes in tiny speakers that i fashioned from old stereos and radios downstairs at 251 "in the middle room" ala Link Wray...I would perfect this art later on in 1985 and 86' working with Dan at South Bay Sound in Gardena on tracks like "Maury - A Lad Insane".

The type of writing that I do is very difficult, technical, and much of it is given to me in 'dreams' as well as thoughts and poems that come out of absolutely no where. Michael Savage's brand new book 'Psychological Nudity' tells alot of stories of Michael's life growing up....and he is a master story teller....Clark the Shark is pretty damn good too...but like Michael, I have a shit-load of unbeatable life experience ya know me being the last of 8 children n all....
As the Shark grows in fame, and as my musical videos multiply each day via viral embeds and thousands of websites, keep in mind that I am 43 yearss old and i'm no longer the skinny little dude back in G.e. ,..I get more respect now and more people each day I notice either don't laugh at me anymore and treat me normal or don't notice me at all ...as comedy that was me not long ago - or anything....this can be good for me,..but also bad too..
I am becoming 'an old man' before my eyes...now
Weird things are beginning to happen to the aging body of Clark the eternally young and youthful Shark; I see gray hairs popping up, I see more wrinkles each day, I find myself losing bits and pieces of my memory of Torrance and the South Bay and even Oceanside here ! My eye-sight is not the same, my ears really ring at night when i try to go to sleep...
My body is changing...and so to is the way a Shark looks at our not so ever changin' world....
The type of writing that I do is clearly a gift from God just like the songs lyrics I once wrote long ago that were so good .....ya know Precarious, Number One, the Magic Man..etc...and later on; Star, Ben is Dead, Addicted, Brandy...
I have my serious doubts and second guessings if i could still record such great music today,..i admit, it would be difficult... I do record stuff now,...but clearly no matter how i try now...I am simply losing a step and my abilities are not the same as 1990 when i was 25....back in Redondo Beach...
Its sorta not unlike a Hockey Player who is 38
I may have hung it all up too early...but back in the day of 1992,; EVERYBODY would say that when yer 27 and 28; ITS OVER.....WHETHER YER SIGNED or in my case unsigned....
I do wonder today if i 'really should' have listened to all that 'society say' bullshit and seeing the energy of guys like Jeff Snow from Rock City Productions and the positive emails he sends me...sometimes that does give me a little energy ..to do things like call up my nephew Hagan and go throw out a jam at Goblin Studios in Vista once in a while....or where-ever i can find..
It does feel good to play live - I'll say that..and me being 43 and fat really hasn't altered the Shark all that much when I see the red lights of the amps burning and I hear the drums playing...it makes me wanna twang that guitar and sing....and it does indeed take me back to the days long ago with me playing Ben is Dead or 'Star' or Waiting for your Love to fail! with Greg Tarpley at the Hermosa Saloon or with Martin Silva and Ted at the Crest in Torrance...
The bottom line is I wanna play music again,..but 'its hard' now sayeth Pete Townshend and others.....its tough to do things like lay out 50 buck$ for studio time n all,...and carry all that shit around in the back of my ford Ranger truck now....
I just wanna go to a club and rock out and show up and 'improvise' ...I know that I can do that...and entertain a crowd for 45 minutes...I don't care about getting paid any money...never did before anyway...
My pool cleaning now can take care of that....
For the Shark now, there is the internet world of fantasy and theres the 'real world of reality',...but my two eyes see them both now as one and the same...
My dream is just to be able to find a way to get paid...and hopefully more money than that schmuck Perez Hilton can ever make....

Notes; Writing is in my DNA ....Obviously, I get this ability from my father Gary who can just write awesome stuff. He writes 'reality' style like me... As we all see, I go way over the line and into a gray area which can piss people off,...but it must be this way, Just like Michael Savage I do not want to leave ANYTHING to your imagination...Everything has to be total detail ; I 'must' be the absolute best and I cannot settle for anything less....its alot like my music. I 'have to be' remembered in the future 300 years from now... I still do not know right now today just when and 'who' will be the circumstances people who 'help' Shark get into some kind of 'mainstream' ...but only that i do know that it will happen somehow eventually someday - and I hope someday soon...

Well, alot of the mouse-clickers of our society were raised by pretty smart people who encouraged their kid's habits, and were generally good to their kid, yeah - they could be rough or a jerk and make their kids sweat at times,..but in general, they gave their kid a positive outlook, a plan for college, maybe church if they weren't too much of a Calif. liberal pinhead schmuck, and other good things too...
People like Clark the Shark were raised a WHOLE 'OTHER WAY baby ! ....When Clark the little jerk Shark was a kid, I was on drugs like ritalin (and real ghoul bullies were 'allowed' to constantly badger me at home and elsewhere in some apparent effort to 'toughen me up" <--oh that really fuckin' worked huh ??)... and i still got c's and d's in school (If Shark ever got a 'B" that was cause for major celebration..A's were out of the question for the most part). We now know that Clark the Shark from G.e. is absolutely NOT one of the sharpest knives in the drawer and my parents knew long ago that Clark the Shark was never gonna be college material,..and not unlike others in my household too..
So as Clark the Shark grew, he looked for 'any job' he could find...and he dreamed of just being lucky to "finding some niche' "...
Well after my storied musical ambitions ended one day long ago, Clark the Shark 'got lucky' and found Swimming Pool Cleaning ...and which had I hadn't found, i'd likely be still at 251 to this day ....downstairs likely fighting bloody battles with Bert and Forrest !
Now, we must talk about our America continent since thats what I'm getting at....
Here in America, Thank Christ al-frickin' mighty...we have lots of college educated mouse-clickers running everything everywhere..and fortunately for us all; Straight talkers like Clark the Shark are bannished to where they belong; being ridiculed and marginalized,..by themselves or otherwise...
